Would You Like the Perfect Lighting for Your Dining Room? Here’s How to Do it Right

submitted on 2 July 2020 by diiiz.com

Proper lighting is essential for any home, and key areas that require the right lighting include the bedroom, the living room, the kitchen, the bathroom, and, of course, the dining room. But while many of us may presume that all that's needed in a dining area is a central light fixture, this is where we make a common mistake because it's not just about the overhead light in your dining area – it's also about creating the right mood and ambience and making sure that the space is bright enough for your needs. But what goes into selecting the perfect lighting for your dining room? Here's how you can do it right.

1. Base it on the dining table
The first thing you should do to make sure that your dining room’s lighting is ideal is to base it on the dining table. What does this mean? It simply means selecting your lights depending on your dining table rather than on the dining room as a whole. This entails installing a chandelier, for example, or a pendant light or a row of pendants above the dining table and hanging them quite low (but not so low that they interfere with your view across the table). The light fixture’s bottom should be about 90 centimetres above the dining table.

2. Determine how to use and place your pendants
Pendant lighting is particularly popular nowadays, and for good reason, as confirmed by the premier lighting specialists from Diiiz.com. Pendant lights can give the appropriate amount of lighting, and you can choose them in different styles that can give your dining area a more striking and appealing focal point. But when you are choosing pendant lights and deciding how they are placed, some factors come into play as well. For instance, if you have a small and narrow dining table, just go for one single pendant light as opposed to a series. The pendant lights you choose should work with the scale of your dining table, in other words. If your dining table is long and rectangular, on the other hand, then you can go for either a big chandelier or a series of pendant lights in an odd number. For some reason, odd numbered-pendants look better than even-numbered ones, so you can opt for either three pendant lights or five pendant lights in a row.

Here’s another thing about pendant lights – you can also use them to separate your dining area if you have an open floor plan or open space. Hang a big pendant over your dining table so it can create a different ‘zone’ from the other spaces in your home, demarcating your dining area from your kitchen, living room, and so on.

3. Make use of dimmers
Dimmers are quite stylish and appealing, and who says they’re only good for living rooms or bedrooms? You can make use of dimmers in your dining area during the night when you’re entertaining guests or hosting a dinner party, and the best and most appealing light for dining and entertaining during the evening is warm, low-level lighting. Lighting like this can set the mood and create a more intimate ambience and instantly makes everyone more attractive as well!
