The Whirlwind World of Product Design and its Peculiar Inhabitants

submitted on 17 May 2023 by designerlistings.org
It was the summer of '74 when I first found myself entangled in the chaotic realm of product design - a wild, dizzying, and oftentimes dangerous landscape, where the simple act of creating a cup or a chair could mean the difference between life, death, and a lifetime supply of cheap, foreign-made knockoffs. The savages who inhabit this strange and mystical place are called "product designers" - an odd breed of humans, part artist, part engineer, and part mad scientist.

In this article, I will attempt to guide you, the hapless soul who has somehow stumbled upon this hellscape, through the treacherous journey of understanding product design as a design discipline. I offer no promises of survival, but with the help of a few tricks, tips, and anecdotes from my own time spent in the trenches, you may just make it out alive.

To begin, we must first acknowledge that the field of product design is vast, encompassing everything from the creation of everyday objects to the development of groundbreaking technologies. It is a world where the line between form, function, and madness is often blurred, leaving those who dare to navigate its depths with a heightened sense of confusion and a penchant for strong drink.

The first step to surviving in this chaotic realm is to understand the basic principles that govern its existence. In the world of product design, there are a few key elements that can make or break a project, and thus, the spirits and livers of those who toil within it.

1. The User: Ah, the elusive "user" - that fickle, unpredictable, and often irksome creature who will ultimately decide the fate of your product and, by extension, your own fragile existence. To succeed in product design, it is essential to understand the wants, needs, and bizarre desires of the user, for it is upon their capricious whims that your success or failure will ultimately rest.

2. The Materials: In the swirling madness of product design, the choice of materials is of utmost importance. It is a delicate dance, a balancing act of cost, durability, and environmental impact, all while trying to avoid the dreaded "cheap and nasty" label. Choose wisely, friends, for the right material can make your product soar, while the wrong one can send it crashing down in a blaze of ignominy and shattered dreams.

3. The Function: To survive in the merciless world of product design, one must always remember the age-old adage: "form follows function." It is a cruel and unforgiving rule, but one that must be adhered to if you have any hope of creating a successful product. Ignore it at your peril, for a product that is beautiful but functionally useless is doomed to a life of ridicule and obscurity.

4. The Aesthetics: Now, I know what you're thinking: "surely you, of all people, are not going to tell us that beauty matters in the cutthroat world of product design?" And to that, I say: yes, dammit, it does! While function may be king, aesthetics are the queen that holds the power behind the throne. A well-designed product is a seductive siren, luring users in with its enchanting form and whispering sweet promises of unparalleled satisfaction.

Now that you have a basic understanding of the principles that govern this treacherous realm, it is time to delve into the practical side of things. Here, I offer some nuggets of wisdom gleaned from my own misadventures in the world of product design, which may just save you from a similar fate:

1. Sketch, and sketch some more: Sketching is the lifeblood of the product designer - it is through this simple act of putting pen to paper that the ideas, dreams, and fever dreams of the designer are brought to life. Sketch, dear friends, until your hand cramps and your vision blurs, for it is only through this tireless pursuit of visual perfection that you will find your way to a successful product design.

2. Prototype, iterate, and then prototype some more: In the unforgiving wasteland of product design, there are countless pitfalls and traps waiting to ensnare the unsuspecting designer. To avoid these dreaded snares, it is essential to prototype your ideas and put them through the wringer of real-world use. Only by testing, iterating, and testing again can you hope to create a product that will withstand the cruel onslaught of user scrutiny.

3. Embrace collaboration: The lone wolf may be a romantic notion, but in the world of product design, it is the pack that survives. The best products are often the result of a team of designers, engineers, and other creative misfits working together to create something greater than the sum of its parts. So hold your allies close, friends, for they are your lifeline in this perilous journey.

4. Prepare for failure, and embrace it: Failure is an inevitable part of the product design process, and the sooner you make peace with this harsh reality, the better off you'll be. Each failure is an opportunity to learn, to grow, and to inch closer to the elusive end goal of creating a successful product. Embrace your failures, friends, for they are the stepping stones on the path to triumph.

In conclusion, the world of product design is a wild, treacherous place, filled with unseen dangers and untold rewards. To succeed in this strange and unforgiving realm, one must be prepared to face the challenges head-on, armed with the knowledge, skills, and sheer, bloody-minded determination to create something truly great. So, strap on your boots, grab your sketchbook, and prepare to enter the whirlwind - it's going to be one hell of a ride.
