The Drawbacks of Free Sports Club Software

submitted on 18 December 2018
Numerous freeware is available to download from the web. You can find some that are created for the management of sports clubs. Is it a good decision to rely on free software, though? Can you entrust your sports club's operations to an application you just downloaded online without paying for it?

There’s nothing wrong with getting sports club membership software free and using it to manage your club. However, you need to be careful with your choices. Be extremely cautious with the applications you download. Read reviews or feedback from other users.

To clarify, the goal of presenting these drawbacks is not to discourage the use of free software. Certainly, there is much freeware that can adequately address the needs of certain organisations or businesses. However, for the sake of prudence, it’s worth knowing the common disadvantages or pitfalls of free software.

Bugs and other issues
Don’t expect the developers of free software to exert a lot of effort trying to perfect the freeware application you want to use. They don’t get anything out of it, so it’s only logical for them to spend more time on projects with which they can generate income. It’s not uncommon to encounter bugs and other defects in apps that are distributed freely to users. Unfortunately, fixes for these bugs are also unlikely to be available, especially for software that doesn't have that many users, like sports club applications.

Lack of updates
In relation to the bug problem, freeware also seldom receives updates to fix problems, introduce new features, or address compatibility issues. Again, developers don’t make money with these apps, so they only provide updates whenever they have the luxury of time to do it. It’s important to bear in mind that apps that don't get updated are prone to cyber threats. These threats keep evolving over the years. The protection instituted in an app at some point is likely no longer going to work against newer threats. Additionally, if operating systems are updated, the app may encounter problems or stop working altogether.

Malware infusion
Another important concern is the presence of viruses, trojans, adware, and other malicious software in free apps. Many freeware options are being distributed to serve as carriers of malware. If you are not careful enough, you may end up infecting your computer as you try to avoid spending on software by getting a free application.

No customer service
Lastly, if you plan on using freeware for your sports club, remember that it does not come with customer service. If you have problems with it, you can’t call on anyone for troubleshooting. You have to figure things out by yourself. You can try contacting the developer, but there’s no guarantee that you will get the assistance you need, let alone a prompt response.

If you want to make an informed decision, it's essential to be aware of the drawbacks and risks that come with the use of free software. It's not impossible to find a reliable and feature-rich software for sports club management, but you have to scrutinise your options carefully.
